Statutory Definitions
We are pleased to announce that Statutory Definitions, across Westlaw UK's legislation service, will be available on Friday 6 December, subject to successful testing. This new feature enables you to find legislative definitions in Acts and Statutory Instruments. Over 70,000 unique definitions are included and can be located via:
- Basic Search – by either searching for a definition across all legislation, or in conjunction with Free Text and Title fields.
- Advanced Search – extends your options to include definitions within Historic Law that has been superseded.
- Overview Document – a glossary of terms defined within an Act or Statutory Instrument; including cross-references to cases where a particular definition has been given judicial consideration.
Basic Search: once you start typing your chosen statutory definition, a list of suggestions will appear in the drop-down list. For example, search for the definition of 'international accounting standards':

Tip: check the Terms in Context box to display extracts containing your search terms in results list.
Advanced Search: for example, search for the definition of 'international accounting standards' across Law in Force and Historic Law:

Overview Document: for example, browse all definitions contained within the Trade Marks Act 1994. The definition of 'bad faith' is discussed in the case Harrison v Teton Valley Trading Co Ltd:
