Welcome to the latest issue of Westlaw UK - What's New

On Friday 15 May you will notice a number of substantial amends and enhancements to Westlaw UK. These are all subject to successful testing and we will update you on go live.

These developments will enable you to…

Search Westlaw UK Crime and Westlaw UK Scots Law via our 
new and improved interface

Westlaw UK Crime and Westlaw UK Scots Law are the first of the Westlaw UK
practice area services to be migrated onto the new platform.

This enhancement enables you to limit the scope of your research to content contained within
Westlaw UK Crime or Westlaw UK Scots Law using a drop-down menu.

NAVIGATING BETWEEN YOUR WESTLAW UK SERVICES

You will notice that we have changed the Westlaw International link in the top toolbar
to Services. This is where you will be able to navigate between Westlaw UK, Westlaw International and the practice area services contained within your subscription. The
content sets within your subscription will appear as live links.

A drop down list of services that you subscribe to will appear.

Simply click on the service you wish to use and you will be taken to the relevant Homepage. Once again, please note that the link to Westlaw International is now under the
Services link.

SETTING YOUR DEFAULT HOME PAGE

To select your default Homepage click Settings & Tools > Options> Default Service

This will now be your homepage each time you log in to Westlaw UK.

Edit and manage your alerts 

We are very pleased to be introducing a number of key enhancements to Westlaw UK alerts.

You can now edit the content of an alert created either from a search or from
the Create Alert screen.

EDITING AN ALERT CREATED FROM A SEARCH

Click the Alerts link on the top navigation bar.

Select the alert you wish to edit from the Alerts List.

Click Edit and you will see the search template from which your original alert was created.
The information you entered when you created the alert will also display.

From here you can edit the search terms, run the search and save your changes by
clicking Save as Alert.

REPLACING AND CREATING ALERTS

You can now replace an existing alert or create a new alert.

EDIT AN ALERT CREATED FROM CREATE AN ALERT PAGE

Select the alert you wish to edit from the Alerts List and click Edit.

You will be taken to the Create Alert screen where the information you entered when you originally set up for the alert will display.

Here you can edit both the content type and subject areas included in your alert. When you save the alert you will be given the option to overwrite an existing alert or create a new one.

This functionality will be available for alerts created from 15 May 2009. Any alerts created before this date will have the Manage link active.

SAVED SEARCH

Your option to create a Saved Search has been added to the Alerts tab as a notification method.

To access any of your existing saved searches, select Alerts from the top toolbar and then click Run Search.


When this notification option is chosen the Frequency, Email Address, File Format and IP Authentication options are greyed out.

Start receiving alerts related to legislation 

You now have the option of creating alerts related to legislation. Searches will return
individual provisions of Acts and SIs.

To create an alert, run a legislation search and simply click Save as Alert.

Alternatively, you can create a legislation alert from the Create a New Alert page,
where Legislation has now been added as a content type.

Alert results will be returned if the subjects selected occur as a principal or associated
subject in new documents loaded to Westlaw UK.

RSS FEEDS

It’s also now possible to create an RSS feed on legislation from either a search or from
the Create an RSS feed page.

Delve further into the Common Law Library, with the addition of 
the new supplement to Bowstead & Reynolds on Agency

We are also delighted to announce that the 2nd supplement of Bowstead & Reynolds on Agency has now been incorporated into the main work on Westlaw UK.

First published in 1896, Bowstead & Reynolds on Agency has established itself as the
leading authority on this highly complex area of commercial law.

All the titles within Sweet & Maxwell’s Common Law Library are now available
on Westlaw UK:

  • Arlidge, Eady & Smith on Contempt 
  • Benjamin's Sale of Goods

Westlaw UK takes the content and applies powerful functionality, including:

  • Direct links to consolidated primary law on Westlaw UK
  • Main work and future supplements merged into one consolidated version
  • Navigation tools from the book replicated online 
  • Westlaw UK's intuitive functionality, enabling individual or multiple search results
    to be printed, downloaded or emailed to colleagues

Stay up to date with the very latest legal developments,  
every 15 minutes

We are delighted to announce that Current Awareness on Westlaw UK is now
updated every 15 minutes.

Current Awareness is the first place to find details of the latest legislation, cases,
journals, legal developments and information, updated every 15 minutes from 8am to 6pm throughout the day every working day. 

The Current Awareness team monitors over 600 sources in order to provide abstracts of material releavant to our customers, including summaries of:

  • The most important cases selected by case specialists
  • Today’s legislation (Acts, Bills, and Statutory Instruments from all UK jurisdictions)
  • Official material and government publications, including consultation documents,
    green papers, white papers, reports and press releases
  • Key developments from over 450 leading Legal Journals
  • European case law, legislation, press releases and information
  • Non-governmental publications of legal significance e.g. guidance published by professional bodies
  • Articles of legal and regulatory significance from the leading UK broadsheet newspapers
