Westlaw UK toolbar enhancements

On March 11, you will notice changes to the Westlaw UK toolbar. These are designed to improve and simplify the way you use Westlaw UK. Please note that changes simply include colour enhancements and relocation/renaming of tabs, and do not affect functionality or the way you are accustomed to using Westlaw UK.

The change is purely cosmetic; all the functionality you are used to remains unchanged.

1) “Customise” has been renamed “Add/Remove Tabs”. Using this link will direct you to the usual screen where you can add/remove tabs like you do now.
View it here

2) Find by Citation and Directory links have been relocated to the top of the screen

3) The “More” drop-down menu has been replaced with a new Site Map designed to help you navigate around the various sections Westlaw UK.
View it here
From the site map, you can link to a full table of contents, access Chargeback or access the Help centre.

4) A new “Alert Centre” link will appear at the towards the top right and this will direct you to the screen that allows you to create/modify Westclips.

Additional changes being made:

- Removal of the “Welcome” link – to start your research from scratch, simply click on the name of tab from which you want to search. This will automatically take you back to the welcome screen

- Options have been renamed “Preferences” and from the screen you can change your preferred settings as before

- All tab labels will now be on one line with a maximum number of characters for each. If you have a combination of tabs where the text would normally be split over two lines, you will see the name of some tabs will be abbreviated to accommodate the one line maximum. An example is “International Arbitration” to “Int’l Arbitration”.

Westclips

Westclips is Westlaw UK’s alerting service and you can create as many as you like to inform you when new material matching your search terms is uploaded. You can use them to:

• Track new case law, legislation or journal articles
• Keep up to date with industry developments
• Monitor client activities
• Stay abreast of company or industry events and new products
• Search for potential patent and trademark infringement
• Review important events and activities affecting your clients

There are three ways to create a Westclip:

1. Using Current Awareness

The Current Awareness service is the most up to date service available, containing information from a variety of sources, updated three times a day.

Click the “Current Awareness” tab at the top of the screen (or if you subscribe to a Practice Area Service) use the relevant link on the left hand side of the screen.
Select a document type and the relevant results from that week will be displayed.

Select “Add Search to Westclip” from the Results Options on the left hand side of the screen
View it here

You will be directed to the Westclip template screen. Your search query will already be pre-filled with the information you require, but you can add to this if you wish. Give the Westclip a name so you can identify it when it is delivered to your email address.

Next, click Edit towards the far right of the screen (next to Delivery Options) to choose your delivery method and frequency.

Frequency: Daily, Weekdays (M-F), Weekly, Biweekly, Monthly or Upon Request
Destination: for example, download to disc, email or notify at sign-on.
Document Format: List of all citations, All Pages (full text pages of the results), first pages (just the first page of each result), All term pages (only pages that include your search terms)

You can limit the number of documents you receive by changed the Maximum documents per result – the default for this is 25. You can also be notified when there are no results for your search.

2. From a search result

When you have executed a search and your results are displayed, click the “Result Options” link and select “Add search to Westclip” link.

You will then be directed to the Westclip template screen. Follow the instructions above.

3. Creating a Westclip using the Template

You can create a Westclip from anywhere on Westlaw UK by using the More Services drop-down menu in the top right-hand corner and selecting Westclip*. This will take you to the Westclip directory, which will list any Westclips you have already created.

*From March 11th, the More Services drop-down menu will disappear. To access the Westclip template screen, please click the new “Alert Centre” link towards the top right of the screen. For more information please refer back to point 4 above.
